GSM-R in a digital age
GSM-R in a digital age
A telephony standard introduced to support the ERTMS, GSM-R is being rolled out across France.
In June 2000, 17 railway networks signed an agreement to introduce GSM-R over the high-speed Trans-European network in order to allow the interoperability of communication systems and rolling stock from one country to another.
This railway-specific solution will allow for digital voice and data transfer and will lead to a reduction in operating, maintenance and investment costs.
At national level, Réseau Ferré de France is currently rolling out the GSM-R along 2,000 km of track in the East of France. After an initial service launch along the Paris—Bar-le-Duc line in January 2007, all of France is due to be covered by June 2009.
At the same time, we are in talks with specialist companies relating to the granting of a public-private partnership contract for deploying the rest of the GSM-R network. The winning company will also be required to manage the operation and maintenance of the system across the whole of the network involved.
GSM-R should be in place across the whole of France by 2014. It will cover 14,000 km of track, and will require the construction of approximately 2,200 relay stations.
