International Level Crossing Awareness Day

A road safety operation carried out worldwide
On 9 June, with the support of the French ministry of Transport, Réseau Ferré de France and the Road Safety and Traffic Directorate (DSCR) will launch their fourth annual operation for road safety at level crossings.
39 countries will simultaneously hold campaigns on level crossings. The joint objective of this international level crossing safety day is to change dangerous behaviour among drivers and pedestrians at level crossings through powerful preventive, informative and educational initiatives. When one considers that 98% of all level-crossing accidents in France are due to a disregard for road-safety rules, the need to reiterate these rules becomes evident.
Mobilisation that is yielding results
In 2010, 112 collisions at level crossings resulted in 27 deaths. Within 10 years, the number of accidents was reduced by half thanks to a policy implemented by Réseau Ferré de France, the State and regional authorities to improve and eliminate level crossings, as well as prevention campaigns. Last year, Réseau Ferré de France recorded a 30% decrease in fatal accidents compared to 2009.
Informing on several fronts in one day
Field operations will be carried out by regional departments of Réseau Ferré de France, with the support of the Police and Gendarmerie, regional authorities, the SNCF, and the French Road Safety Association, with the aim of raising awareness among road users at 12 level crossings, and reminding them of road-safety rules.
At the same time, a poster campaign featuring three characters – “careless”, “reckless”, and “impatient” – will be seen on billboards in the towns involved in the operation, as well as on the website www.securite-passageaniveau.fr. A web and radio message recorded by Laura Flessel, two-time Olympic fencing champion and world fencing champion, will round off the information campaign. In addition, 110,000 educational quizzes will be distributed in large French towns from 8 to 22 June 2011.
