550 million euro was granted to this major project initiated by Réseau Ferré de France and the Nord-Pas de Calais regional council as part of the “investing in the future” programme for large loans.

The outcome of a consortium between stakeholders in the railway sector, public research and local authorities, RAILENIUM is a project of European and international reach. Built on the foundations of the global competitiveness cluster i-Trans, its aim is to become the world leader in rail infrastructure Research and Development.

Meeting the challenges of a fast-growing market

The future European Institute of Technological Research will endeavour to respond to manufacturers’ needs by bringing together foremost researchers from the public and industrial sectors in France and in Europe. As such, RAILENIUM will provide research facilities and platforms that are unique in Europe.

The infrastructures thus developed will meet 3 strategic aims:
Sustainability;
Improved efficiency, safety and intelligence;
Easier certification.

550 million euro funding

Valérie Pécresse, Minister of Higher Education and Research, and René Ricol, General Commissioner for Investment, presented the results of the request for proposals from TRI (Technological Research Institutes) on 9 May this year. The RAILENIUM proposal was one of 7 projects chosen by the government after examination by an international jury convened by the French National Research Agency, ANR.
550 million euro will go to the Institute, which will further receive funding from local authorities, the State, manufacturers, training and research establishments, and generated turnover.
