Faced with the liberalisation of freight and passenger rail services, we have tailored our policies to meet these railway challenges: developing our service offer, designing and proposing access solutions

Opening up the railway sector

As the public company that owns the railway network, our goals involve developing freight transport, increasing network usage, making it an efficient tool that meets the expectations of users, and preparing for the liberalisation of passenger traffic in 2010. In addition, we always keep a close eye on the economic viability and sustainable funding of the railways.

Increasing the attractiveness of the railway network

 Réseau Ferré de France has been involved in extensive work to encourage growth on the railways with the support of public authorities and shall continue to do so by:

Creating a regulatory body to ensure the successful opening of the freight sector to competition today, and the passenger sector tomorrow.
Reforming usage charges in order to balance actual network costs with sales revenues;
Attracting new clients who are authorised to demand access to the network;
Managing the allocation of rail paths.

Acting at local, national and European level

 Our task is to modernise the network and open it to competition, reorganise traffic and usage, reduce maintenance costs and encourage innovative advances such as rolling motorways and local operators.

Providing safer, better, more innovative and sustainable access to trains, regions, towns and to Europe.
