Réseau Ferré de France owns several large parcels of land adjacent to its network and to railway stations, some of which have been used for urban development, in particular in large metropolitan areas.

Development of railway land

As the country's second-largest landowner, Réseau Ferré de France develops this property, in particular railway land, in urban development projects.

These projects include land reconversion as well as the development of structures around train stations (car parks, exchange clusters).

Development guidelines

In 2007, we prepared and committed to several guidelines for developing railway property on a certain number of sites across France. In particular, these sites include Le Havre, Dieppe, Sète, Nice, Angoulême, Saint-Ouen, Pantin, Seine-Amont, Bordeaux, Niort, Toulouse, Grenoble, and Marseilles.

These guidelines determine the portions of railway sites eligible for reconversion and that can be used in urban developments.

In 2007, we also set out a programme for covering high-stakes sites in a planning document by 2010.

Partnership with local authorities

We also reinforced our partnerships with local authorities in order to define the new uses for reconverted railway land in consultation with these partners.

In 2007, new protocols or agreements were established under these partnerships, concerning the Paris-Batignolles, Sotteville, Saint-Nazaire, Dreux, Orléans, Toulouse, Rennes, Montpellier, Cannes, Paris-Ourcq, Nanterre (Les Groues sector), Argenteuil, Mulhouse, Charleville-Mézières, and Charte de L’Yonne sites in particular.

Cooperation charter with SNCF

The division of property between Réseau Ferré de France and SNCF was finalised in late 2006: the two establishments now work together on development projects that involve neighbouring plots of land.

For these shared projects, we drew up a cooperation charter with SNCF. This charter has been applied since mid-2007 to all of our major development projects.

The charter makes it possible to synergise our development dynamics and guarantees railway development that is both rational and open, and it ensures that more land is released for urban development.

100 high-stakes sites should be covered by an urban reconversion programme by 2010.
